How to Putt Like a Pro

Whether you’re an experienced golfer or a beginner, putting is the area most people need practice in. You may be able to drive the ball 300 yards off the tee, but it doesn’t do you a whole lot of good if you finish with six putts!

There are a number of ways you can improve your putting skills, and we’ll take a look at the best of them. So grip that putter tightly and get ready to learn how to putt like a pro.

Practice

Practice your putting skills at every opportunity. Better yet, practice using the tips you find in this article for best results. Putting under different lies and conditions is the best way to improve your putting game.

Use the shoulders and not your hands to make a putt

Are you coming up short on long putts? If so, there is a good chance that you’re using your hands and wrists to putt with. This may work if you’re making a short putt, but it doesn’t work very effectively if you’re making a long one. Use your arms and shoulders for every putt, and get into the habit of doing so.

Aim past the hole

Try to aim your putt a little past the hole, especially if you’re putting up hill or find that your putts come up short most of the time.

Visualize the area

Take a close look at the green and visualize how and where your ball is supposed to go. Have you ever watched golf and saw one of the pros kneeling down and looking at the green? Now you know why. He’s visualizing, which makes it a lot easier to make the putt and close out the hole.

Try and hit the same spot of the putter every time

You’ll hear golfers talk about the ’sweet spot.’ The sweet spot isn’t always where the manufacturer of the club paints the little line, although it’s supposed to be. The sweet spot is pretty much the spot on the putter that is the most stable. Regardless, you should try to strike the ball with the same part of the putter every time. This will give you better consistency.

Keep the club face square to the ball

If you want the ball to go in the direction you intend it to, you need to make sure that the club face strikes the ball squarely. Make sure not to angle the club, or loop your shot to the side.

Body Alignment

Body alignment is very important. Make sure that the ball is no further back than the middle of your stance. This also ensures that your eyes are aligned with the target.

Now that you have read this article, go out and practice what you’ve learned. Consistency is very important in the game of golf, and without constant practice, you’re less likely to achieve consistency.

Now go get em’ “Tiger!”

See you on the green,
